XENIA — The City Council on Feb. 12 adopted an amendment to the traffic code clarifying that electric bicycles with the motor engaged may not be ridden on sidewalks.
The Law Director said state traffic code speaks to bicycles whose motor is not engaged and that local language did not make enforcement straightforward. "Bicycles and electric bicycles with the motor engaged may not be driven upon a sidewalk," the Law Director said, adding the amendment does not change what is legal under state law but makes the prohibition clearer for officers and the public.
Council discussed how the city might inform residents — by press release, social media and targeted signage in high-volume locations such as the Market District — and agreed staff should study outreach options. No members of the public spoke during the hearing. Councilwoman Sarris moved the ordinance and Councilwoman Huffman seconded; the council approved the change by unanimous roll call.
The change aims to make enforcement more straightforward for officers and to give residents clearer guidance on where electric bicycles may be operated.
