Avon moves to name parks, add trail wayfinding and emergency markers in multi-phase safety plan

Shelby Pride presented a list of proposed park names (examples included Heritage Park, Lakeside Park, Foundation Park, Apex Park and a playful name for a pickleball area) and suggested limited public voting for only a small number of high-profile parks. "I was about to say pull the trigger...it is time to just pull the plug on what we're gonna call these," Shelby said, urging timely decisions so signage and public materials can proceed.
Tiffany Bates then outlined the trail safety and wayfinding plan: color-coded trail signage and maps, quarter-mile mile markers, QR codes linking to online trail maps, naming of small shelters and landmarks, and consideration of emergency call stations or low-cost PA-style phones in high-traffic areas. Council discussed camera vs. non-camera call stations, solar versus electric power constraints in wooded areas, and phasing to start with three parks currently out for bid and the White Lick Trail.
Council members supported a phased approach: commence with mile markers and wayfinding signage in developed park areas, then expand to broader trail networks as funding and developer contributions are identified. Staff noted potential funding from existing wayfinding budgets and future budget proposals.
