City staff and South Coast Community Aquatics told the Crescent City City Council that a winter partnership with Brookings produced strong community participation and programmatic benefits while the city pool was closed for renovations.
Alyssa Garcia, the city’s aquatic supervisor, said the partnership delivered swim lessons, open swim and swim-team practice and that “we had a little over 3,000 people attend with us in those 3 months.” Garcia also noted about 87 sponsored passes were provided to low-income seniors through support from the local health care district.
Val Early, president of South Coast Community Aquatics, described the pilot as a successful collaboration that allowed participants to use Brookings’ newly resurfaced pool and provided staffing and program continuity. “It was a fabulous, pilot program for us,” Early said, adding that staffing from Crescent City was praised by participants.
City staff said they will return to the council with final revenue and cost-split figures so members can review how revenues and expenses should be allocated between Crescent City and Brookings. No formal action was taken beyond receiving the presentation.
