Board hears proposal to let graduating seniors buy their assigned laptops; devices to be wiped and sold as-is

The Talbot County Board of Education on Feb. 11 considered guidelines for an optional resale program allowing graduating seniors to purchase the district laptop and accessories assigned to them.
Mr. Wilson presented the proposed criteria: only graduating seniors who do not transfer or withdraw are eligible, the device must be the student’s assigned laptop and in working order with no screen damage, obligations must be paid in full, requests must be submitted by May 1, and an adult must sign the bill of sale if the student is a minor. Technology staff will securely wipe devices, unenroll them from the district mobile‑device management system and Apple enrollment, and reinstall the operating system; licensed applications and endpoint security will not be included.
Mr. Wilson said staff surveyed resale markets and estimated values in the $400–$700 range depending on condition, and cautioned the district will not provide returns or post‑sale support: "The sale will be final." The proposal anticipates up to roughly 350 devices could be available; the district will set final prices and could use an Education Foundation fund or community donations to help students who cannot afford purchase costs.
Board members asked about pricing parity, potential community funds to assist low‑income students, and whether one uniform price would apply; staff said they plan an AR/policy and will consider community assistance options.
