Radford’s midyear literacy update showed more than 60% of kindergarten students in the low‑risk band at midyear and MAP data for intervention students projecting improved outcomes on upcoming SOLs, according to literacy staff.
At the Feb. 10 meeting, literacy lead Jane Cox presented midyear VALS and MAP assessment results and interpreted trends for elementary and intervention students.
Cox said kindergarten moved from about 30% in the low‑risk band at fall to more than 60% at midyear and that first grade showed similar improvement. She explained that VALS is a statewide common assessment and noted that intervention students are assessed with MAP, a nationally normed test, in addition to HMH Read 180 intervention programming.
Cox and other staff highlighted that MAP and HMH projections show intervention students in several grades moving toward or above the national typical line, and that HMH graphs project a higher share of students to pass their reading SOLs than in the prior year. Staff described intervention components including daily small‑group instruction and computer‑adaptive practice and invited board members to review more detailed percentages on provided charts.
Board members praised teacher work and noted that the assessments provide evidence the division’s reading interventions are producing positive midyear results.
