The Morganton City Council on Feb. 9 adopted amendments to downtown parking regulations that remove the all‑day free parking designation on the 100 block of North Green Street and replace it with a three‑hour limit on both sides of the block.
Staff said the block had long been set as all‑day free parking but commercial activity has increased and customers are now competing with long‑term parkers. Staff noted the 200 block and the city’s public parking lot remain available for longer‑term parking, and that parking behind the movie theater will be checked for lighting and availability.
Councilmembers discussed which block was affected and clarified that the amendment applies to the first (100) block of North Green Street; the council adopted a resolution approving recommended amendments and an ordinance amending Appendix 1 of the city code to implement the change.
The change takes effect upon adoption; staff said enforcement and signage updates will follow.
