Sheridan County board appoints Coco Knudson as temporary county assessor

Sheridan County commissioners on Jan. 20 appointed Coco Knudson as the temporary successor to fill the county assessor vacancy, following interviews of three candidates.
Knudson, who described herself as born and raised in Sheridan County and having moved from part-time election-office work into GIS and assessor’s office duties, told the board she would prioritize accessibility and clear communication with taxpayers. "I want to be open, have an open door where they feel like they can come in and talk to me and I can explain," Knudson said during her interview.
The board heard from two other finalists before the vote. Steve Kennedy, a 20-year assessor’s office employee and certified property appraiser, highlighted the office’s technical work, including market stratification and ratio studies the Department of Revenue has used as a teaching example statewide. "If appointed, my priorities will include maintaining accurate and uniform assessment while the assessment processes are consistent, data driven, and clearly communicated," Kennedy said.
David Cox joined the meeting by phone and told commissioners he would focus on listening to taxpayers and explaining valuations and statutory requirements. "If I can part ways with them understanding ... how everything works and why we do what we do, that would be, I think, beneficial for everybody," Cox said.
After an executive session to discuss the interviews, Commissioner Schroeder moved to appoint Knudson to the assessor position "to assume your duties upon taking the oath of office and executing your official bond to the state of Wyoming and continuing until 01/04/2027." The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote; the chair declared the motion carried.
The board did not record a roll-call tally in the public transcript; the motion was carried by voice vote. The meeting adjourned immediately after the appointment, and the chair said staff would call David Cox with the outcome.
Knudson told commissioners she would begin by meeting with staff to review expectations, address backlogs such as six-year reviews, and work to improve office efficiency and public outreach. The appointee and county will complete the formal oath and bonding required before she assumes official duties.
