Sheridan County hears audit timeline; commissioners discuss whether to solicit bids

County staff reported Dec. 22 that a draft of Sheridan County’s audit could be provided to staff that day or the next, with a week allotted for reviewers to flag wording or findings before release to the commissioners. Staff said the final audit is pending a few items from the hospital.
Commissioner Jennings asked when the county would need to put audit services out to bid if the commission chose to seek a new auditor. Cameron said the commission must direct staff to solicit bids and that timing matters: some firms will not bid unless they have 12–18 months lead time, others could bid on a 2–3 month timeline, and one auditor preferred up to eight months. Cameron said going to bid does not guarantee respondents and that the county should decide whether to include the request in the queue for future action.
Cameron recommended the commission provide direction if it wants staff to prepare a bid request so there is sufficient time for outreach and potential responders to prepare proposals.
