A BFC committee recommended the Board approve a Tech Clean California grant (~$299,091) to install heat‑pump water heaters in up to 30 family child‑care provider facilities, provide contractor trainings, and complete installations by Dec. 31, 2026.
The Budget and Finance Committee on Feb. 11 recommended the Board approve a retroactive grant award of about $299,091 from Tech Clean California to the Department of the Environment for a project that will install heat‑pump water heaters in up to 30 family child‑care provider facilities and expand electrification training for contractors.
Alice Hurst, senior policy coordinator at the Department of the Environment, said the grant—administered through a program funded by the California Public Utilities Commission and managed by SoCal Edison/ Energy Solutions—will pilot interventions that lower market barriers to heat‑pump space and water heating in underserved communities and layer electrification into existing rehabilitation projects.
Benny Zink, the department’s electrification coordinator, said an orientation for providers drew about 90 attendees and the department expects strong participation; all installations must be completed by Dec. 31, 2026 with reporting through March 31, 2027. The committee voted to forward the grant agreement to the Board with recommendation.
