Prince George County Parks and Recreation asked the Board of Supervisors on Nov. 25 for consensus to solicit bids for a proposed 40x30 pavilion at the JEJ Moore Athletic Complex. Parks supervisor Roxel said the structure—similar to one at Scott Park—would provide covered seating, shelter during storms, electrical power and public internet access, and help the county attract larger tournaments including the Dixie Softball World Series in 2027.
Centennial Contractors provided a rough order of magnitude of approximately $300,000 for materials and labor. Staff proposed funding the project from the county’s tourism (lodging) fund. Several board members expressed concern that the $300,000 figure was high and recommended soliciting competitive bids; other supervisors supported moving forward with an open bidding process. The board gave consensus to solicit bids, noting the invitation for bids will go out through the state procurement platform and local contractors can participate.
Earlier in public comment, Tiffany Link and others described Temple Park—a 32‑acre property donated to the county—as neglected and urged improvements including a security gate, restroom upgrades and repairs to courts and fields. A board member asked Parks to compile a list of Temple Park deficiencies for future budget consideration; Parks staff agreed to include Temple Park projects in upcoming budget planning.
Board members discussed funding flexibility from tourism dollars and emphasized that tourism‑funded projects must tie to tournament or visitor use. Parks staff noted prior tourism investments used for recreational facilities and said they would provide details on tourism fund eligibility and potential allocations.
