Henrico board approves superintendent contract extension, consent agenda and routine calendar changes

The Henrico County School Board on Aug. 14 approved several motions that advanced routine administration and governance matters, including an amendment that extends the superintendent's contract by one year.

Board member Mister Irving moved to approve the eighth amendment to the superintendent's employment agreement and authorize the chair to execute it; the motion passed by voice vote. The amendment extends the superintendent's contract one year, from June 30, 2028, to June 30, 2029. The superintendent thanked the board for its confidence and said she looked forward to continuing to serve HCPS.

Earlier in the meeting the board approved the day's agenda and later approved the consent agenda (items 8.01–8.33) after a clarification from Miss Atkins about the meaning of "consumables" in the curricular context; presenters clarified that consumables — workbooks, journals and similar single-use curricular materials — are provided free of charge.

Other procedural actions included a motion to enter and later certify a closed session taken under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act exemptions cited in the authorizing motion. The board also approved two religious-exemption requests for individual student cases that were handled in closed session.

The board approved the 2026 meeting-calendar schedule and voted to move the December 2025 meeting date from Dec. 11 to Dec. 18. Members also selected Marcy Shea as delegate and Christy Kinsella as alternate delegate for the Virginia School Boards Association delegate assembly.

All approvals recorded in the meeting were voice votes with the transcript reporting "the ayes have it"; the meeting record in board docs will include the formal roll call or recorded vote where required by policy.

No contested motion on the public record failed during the Aug. 14 session; most votes were routine approvals of agenda, calendar and consent items.
