Maricopa council issues Veterans Day and Alzheimer’s proclamations; approves two citizen appointments

Maricopa — The City Council opened its Nov. 4 meeting with community recognitions and three proclamations, then approved two citizen appointments by unanimous vote.
Mayor Nancy Smith read a proclamation recognizing Nov. 11, 2025 as Veterans Day and invited veterans and parade organizers for photo recognition. The council also proclaimed November 2025 as Alzheimer’s and Caregiver Month; Mary Grace told the council that the community now has local caregiver supports through Central Arizona Aging, including a Memory Cafe scheduled for Nov. 14 that Mary Grace said is free and open to caregivers and people living with memory loss.
The council proclaimed Nov. 4 through Jan. 2 a citywide food-drive participation period and named locations where donations will be accepted, including city hall, the library and the Copper Sky Multigenerational Center.
On appointments, Council member Liermann nominated Thalen Johnson to the Parks & Recreation Committee; Johnson is a veteran and will begin service Jan. 1, 2026. Council member Noor recommended Chad Whittle to replace Alfonso Juarez Jr. on the Planning & Zoning Commission; Whittle’s background includes longtime work with Maricopa Unified School District and leadership on the MUSD bond committee. The council approved both appointments by motion and voice vote during the meeting.
The consent agenda was approved earlier in the meeting; no public speakers appeared during the general call to the public.
