Council OKs five‑year fire protection contract with Huron Township

The Huron City Council adopted Resolution 9‑2026 to authorize a five‑year agreement with the Board of Trustees for Huron Township to provide fire protection and emergency squad services for properties and residents within Huron Township, effective Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2031.
At the presentation, Chief Keith McGrath summarized the contract as "pretty much what we've been doing with them." He described the financial structure: "50% of the operating budget will come from them, 50% of the capital purchases will come from them. Any capital or equipment purchased will be the property of the city of Huron, and depreciation for, will be taken out, each year by what's owed by the township during that contract."
Council asked questions, and the resolution was adopted on final vote by roll call. Councilors acknowledged the chief's presentation and approved movement forward under the terms described.
Because the agreement is intergovernmental, Hamilton and the chief emphasized the city will continue to track capital ownership and depreciation against township obligations as spelled out in the adopted resolution.
