The Building, Land and Recreation Committee heard broad discussion about deferred maintenance across Maumee parks and field facilities and considered sponsorships, signage and phased repairs as ways to address persistent problems.
Speaker 6 said many parks and athletic fields have not received adequate preventative maintenance and proposed starting a phased program to bring fields back to athletic standards, noting buried or nonfunctional irrigation heads and uneven turf. Committee members and residents highlighted specific needs: a sidewalk at Ralph Park to avoid people cutting through trees, improved signage and mapping for tournaments, and replacement or replenishment of playground mulch.
During public comment, John Sayer, a Maumee resident, urged the city to allow sponsorship signage and seek foundation support, saying private donors could offset costs. Speaker 8 confirmed the city had recently passed an ordinance allowing signage at parks; committee members said temporary sponsor signs would be acceptable if staff review them for appropriateness.
Resident Ashley Brown offered to help solicit sponsorships for soccer programs and urged staff to inspect sprinkler-head alignment before the spring to prevent water waste; she said many heads currently spray sidewalks, parking lots or even sewers instead of turf. Speaker 6 said staff have begun an assets spreadsheet and will present a prioritized list once cleaned up, and recommended working with volunteer groups where appropriate while observing liability constraints for work on city property.
Committee members agreed to wait for staff cost and priority lists before committing funds and to consider phased field repairs in the coming budget cycle.
