Parish to test landfill flare; DEQ found no deficiencies, officials warn of visible 40‑foot flame

DeSoto Parish officials told the Police Jury on Nov. 5 that a blower/flare test at the Monday Landfill had been delayed for mechanical reasons and was rescheduled. Contractors cautioned that during testing the flare could produce visible flames that ‘‘can reach peaks of 40 feet’’ above the facility; local emergency responders were notified in advance.
The parish administrator also said the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality inspected the flare facility and reviewed landfill operations and that "no deficiencies were noted at this time." Officials stressed the flare would not sustain a continuous 40‑foot flame and would have intermittent higher peaks during testing.
Why it matters: Visible test flares can alarm residents if they are not notified; the parish said DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office, Fire District 8, DeSoto EMS and DeSoto 9‑1‑1 were informed in advance. Officials urged residents who see a large flame during testing to note that contractors had announced the test.
What happens next: The contractor will complete mechanical work and proceed with ignition on the rescheduled date; staff will continue to coordinate notifications with local emergency services.
