DeSoto Parish Police Jury members approved a resolution formalizing procedures and a submission deadline for nongovernmental grant requests to be considered during the parish budgeting process.
Staff and legal counsel said the resolution simply puts into writing a process the parish had followed informally: applicants must submit their grant requests and supporting documentation by Sept. 30 to be included in budget deliberations. Staff said the parish will provide written guidance, distribute the resolution to past and prospective applicants and post it on the parish website.
Jurors emphasized accountability. The resolution requires organizations seeking funding to supply documentation showing how money would be spent and to explain the public benefit, and staff said the parish will request receipts or other backup to verify expenditures if funding is later awarded. "There's a requirement that they provide us backup ... how they spend the money," staff said during the discussion. The jury voted to approve the resolution.
