County maintenance team reports boiler rupture; commissioners authorize immediate repair estimated at $20,000–$30,000

County maintenance staff told the Sheridan County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 that a major rupture inside the piping of a county boiler system forced the system offline and required immediate repairs.
"We had a pretty major rupture in our boiler system piping," the maintenance representative said, describing water streaming from the unit and work to pull back insulation to access the damaged area. The vendor, Johnson Controls, responded quickly but did not have the exact replacement part on hand and the county installed a temporary patch to keep systems operating.
A commissioner later reported having authorized emergency repairs to limit downtime. "We're talking 20 to 30,000 for all of this, and I didn't have time to talk to you guys first, so I authorized the repair," the commissioner said, adding that full replacement of the boiler system would likely be in the "half‑million or more" range.
County staff said they have not yet received a finalized cost estimate from the vendor and that the repair approach is intended to restore service while deferring a full replacement, which would carry a substantially higher price tag. No formal procurement action or budget amendment was recorded during the meeting.
Outlook: County staff expects further information and cost detail from the vendor in the coming days and will update the board when more complete pricing and schedule data are available.
