Council directs staff to install 4-way stop at 5th and A streets to address repeated minor collisions

The Crescent City Council voted to direct staff to install a 4-way stop, upgrade pedestrian access and add traffic striping at the 5th and A Street intersection to reduce collisions and improve safety for pedestrians and school routes.
Director Yeager described the location as two collector streets coming together and cited six recorded accidents during the study period. He told the council the plan includes new stop signs and markings, added crosswalks, ADA corner ramps where needed and initial advance-message boards to alert drivers. Yeager estimated anticipated costs at about $22,000 and said the work would be funded from existing Measure S and general fund street budgets. "So the only way to curtail this is to add a 4 way stop," Yeager said.
Public commenters supported the safety focus though some asked whether simply adding a stop sign would change driver behavior. The City Manager said enhanced striping, crosswalks and making the intersection a four-way stop should reduce turning conflicts and mistaken assumptions that approaching vehicles would stop.
The council approved the motion and directed staff to implement the improvements and report back on monitoring results.
