Auburn School Committee warns FY27 draft budget will be tight; $100,000 cut would likely affect personnel

The Auburn School Committee on Feb. 11 received an update on the FY27 draft budget that projects a 4.19% increase and reflects not filling six positions. The superintendent said roughly 97–98% of the budget is nondiscretionary — tied to personnel, maintenance and software contracts — leaving limited flexibility for cuts. The committee is scheduled to present the budget to the Auburn Select Board on Feb. 17 or Feb. 20, pending town administration confirmation.
Committee members asked staff to model how the district would absorb a hypothetical additional $100,000 reduction and were told that such a cut would likely affect personnel because payroll and contracts make up the vast majority of the budget. The superintendent said a firmer answer will be available after discussions with the Select Board and finance officials in March and April. No formal vote on budget adjustments was taken at the meeting; the FY27 presentation will return to a future meeting for further discussion.
