The policy committee decided to use Student Government Day on March 19 as an informal student-policy forum to solicit student perspectives on homework, attendance and funding and to inform future policy work.
Members said students asked to discuss homework, attendance and funding; staff and board liaisons will do pre-work so the session yields usable input. The meeting will be informal and labeled a "student policy forum" to avoid extra legal noticing requirements while allowing the board to take student feedback into account. One member described last year27s student engagement on dress code as productive and suggested similar framing for homework and crowdfunding questions.
On the homework policy question, members debated whether to create a broad ad hoc committee with many stakeholders or a smaller working group of policy-committee members to gather data and recommend policy language tied to the district27s strategic plan. Concerns about overtaxing staff and creating duplicate, shadow committees led members to table a formal committee vote and favor an ad hoc working group charged with data collection, stakeholder surveys and drafting recommendations for the policy committee to review.
Staff were asked to circulate meeting dates and invites (proposed March 3, March 24, April 7, April 21, May 5) and to solicit sample language and stakeholder input ahead of the next committee meeting.
