Summary
DCS chief of staff told appropriators the agency needs $238,900 to cover lease escalations in three circuits and $877,196 for law-enforcement defined-contribution retirement calculations, and described closed offices and use of virtual/hotel workspace models.
The Department of Community Supervision told the House Public Safety Subcommittee it needs targeted funding to cover lease escalations and employee retirement-calculation costs.
Scott Nauer, DCS chief of staff, said three judicial-circuit offices (West Georgia, Ogeechee, Mountain Circuit) face lease increases driven by State Properties Commission market analyses; the agency requested $238,900 to cover those escalations and said the amount equates to roughly two to three positions.
Nauer also outlined a $877,196 item tied to law-enforcement defined-contribution retirement calculations for eligible employees, and said DCS has closed 55 leased offices since its inception, relying increasingly on vehicles and virtual work with hotel space available as needed.
"This is a conservative amount to cover it," an agency representative said of the lease request. Committee members asked about double-riding of officers and operational logistics; staff clarified that many officers still ride two-to-a-vehicle for efficiency and safety.
Appropriations staff will consider DCS items in the FY27 budget process; no vote was recorded at the hearing.
