Students in an eighth‑grade trades and skills class presented a student‑led retro/Valentine's dance that doubled as a service‑learning project; presenters said the last dance raised about $730 and that proceeds support a local charity that serves people experiencing homelessness.
Students from Harrison Middle School on Feb. 14 described a student‑led service‑learning project that combined event planning, trades skills and fundraising.
Mark Beavers, an eighth‑grade ELA and trades teacher, told the board the class shifted from academic enrichment to teaching trades and applied skills. “This year, instead of doing academic enrichment for middle schoolers, we're teaching them the trades and skills... I wanted it to be fully student driven,” Beavers said.
Two students — identified in the presentation as Maxine Reynolds and "Christian Lee Robert Latimer" — outlined the planning process: proposal development, budgeting, volunteer roles, marketing, concessions and safety measures including chaperones. They said ticket pricing used a $2 preorder and a $4 at‑door price. The presenters reported that a previous (Christmas) dance raised about $730, which was given to a local charity that serves people experiencing homelessness.
The students described the project as intentionally designed to develop leadership, problem solving and project‑management skills while providing a community benefit. A board member offered praise and asked the students to pose for a photo with the board.
Next steps: Students said they are proceeding with plans for an upcoming Valentine’s dance with administrative approvals in place.
