Beaver County proclaims 50th anniversary of Community College of Beaver County’s Dome

The Beaver County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 12 adopted a proclamation recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Community College of Beaver County’s geodesic Dome, citing its groundbreaking on Oct. 26, 1974, and dedication on Feb. 26, 1976.
The proclamation, presented by county legal staff, noted the Dome is one of only eight remaining geodesic structures in the United States and recounted events held there over the years, including job fairs, athletic competitions and graduations. After the solicitor recommended approval, a commissioner moved and another seconded the proclamation; the board approved it by voice vote.
Commissioners and guests offered personal recollections and praise. One commissioner called the Dome “unique” and “iconic to Beaver County” and thanked staff for preservation work. A former teacher recounted following the Dome’s construction in 1974 and described the method of jacking and setting the structure during the build.
Representatives from the college introduced student-athlete Brooklyn Medina and new women’s basketball coach Sanford Silver, noting recent team records and that the team sits second in the region. The college invited commissioners to a celebration planned for Feb. 25.
The board did not attach funding or legislative conditions to the proclamation; the solicitor noted related resolutions on the agenda had been reviewed by the law department and that construction and funding for CCBC projects continue.
