Wayne School District official reports steady progress on new school, flags plumbing and meter problems

A representative who identified himself as Sean updated the Bicknell Town Council during public comment on Feb. 5 about construction and operations in the Wayne School District. He said the new facilities are largely on schedule — roughly a year from completion — and that the district is prioritizing finishing the school so elementary students can move in during the summer.

Sean described current work on mechanical and iron components, compaction testing performed by the project contractor, and interior fit‑out including art and seating. He said many constituents favored a full‑size gym for the elementary school and that the district had the funding and community support to build it. The gym’s elevation required extra fill and grading but the district conducted compaction testing and said the site preparation met standards.

Separately, Sean raised operational problems at the high school: several plumbing issues and a persistent outside tap that will not shut off, along with at least one water meter that appears to be under‑reading (a recent read showed about 300 gallons, which staff said was too low). He asked the council to relay any constituent questions about contractor work and said he would follow up with the contractors and superintendent to resolve meter and plumbing issues.

Sean also noted district attendance and academic metrics are up and said parents have reacted positively to the four‑day school week. He invited council members and residents to tour the new facility when convenient.

Next steps: Sean said he will work with the superintendent and contractors to address the tap and meter issues and encouraged council members to report contractor problems they observe so the district can respond.
