The speaker described the plaza as "an emblem of who we are as a community" and said it should "tell our story in a real and tangible way."
Unidentified Speaker 1 said the square is intended for a range of civic uses. "Rosa Parks Square is a place where our citizens can be their highest form of themselves. It is a place that can be a place of joy, where events can take place, or a form of expression when things aren't going right," the speaker said.
The speaker placed the plaza in the downtown civic context, saying it "addresses City Hall and [is] nestled with our Centennial Project, the city auditorium," linking the redesign to nearby municipal landmarks. The speaker also listed local civil-rights figures DT Walton and Ozybelle McKay and referred to Rosa Parks as a national figure who inspired the square's identity.
