The director described the kits as small, 15-plant collections intended to be planted in yards as an alternative to mowing and as a way to attract wildlife.
The director told the board the grant includes a non-cash match valued at $1,750 for staff time to grow and repot plants, assemble the kits and distribute them. The department plans to prepare in January, promote the giveaway in February, select recipients by lottery in March and distribute the kits in May.
Board member (first referenced as "Board member") moved to approve acceptance of the grant; the motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote.
The director said the program is intended to partially fill the gap left when the city discontinued a prior "No Mow May" program by raising awareness about pollinators. A board member suggested donating some kits to neighborhood associations with community gardens; the director said those groups could enter the same lottery process.
The board's action formally accepts the grant and authorizes staff to proceed with implementation according to the timeline provided by the director. No opposed votes were recorded.
