Director: affordable-housing zoning changes passed; staff to produce outreach materials

During director’s reports at the Dec. 8 Plan Commission meeting, staff reported that the City Council passed a set of zoning changes aimed at supporting affordable housing and that staff will prepare an information sheet explaining what the changes mean for builders, neighborhood groups and property owners.
The director said the zoning revisions were likely the largest affordable-housing initiative in about a decade and recommended staff outreach to explain what can be built under the new rules. "The affordable housing zoning changes were passed, which is probably the biggest thing to happen in regards to affordable of an initiative in the past 10 years," the director said.
Commissioners discussed next steps: staff will draft an info sheet that summarizes the text amendments, implementation steps and an expected review window. Staff noted that text amendments include a change to single-family lot minimum width from 50 to 60 feet while two-family lot standards remain at 50 feet; staff plans to review the amendments in six to nine months and adjust as needed based on implementation experience.
The director also reported brief updates on other items: the alley project at 409 West Walnut was held for further design work on turn radiuses, and council referred a comprehensive review of the short-term-rental ordinance to staff to work with stakeholders.
