Craven County approves multiple budget amendments, awards shoreline contract and accepts sheriff grant

At its April 1 meeting the Craven County Board of Commissioners approved a $70,000 water maintenance amendment, a $150,000 facilities amendment, a $247,380 sheriff39s grant appropriation, a $114,360 living-shoreline construction contract award and several routine resolutions and appointments.
Craven County commissioners used the remainder of their April 1 agenda to approve a series of budget amendments, a construction contract and other routine items.
Water Superintendent Dale Booth told the board that leak repairs totaled $93,000 as of March 1 and requested a $70,000 transfer into the maintenance-and-repair line to cover expected repairs through the fiscal year. Commissioners approved the $70,000 amendment by roll call.
Planning Director Chad Strong asked the board to award the Bridgepoint Living Shoreline construction contract to Bobby Cahoon Construction. Staff said eight proposals were received and that Bobby Cahoon's fee fit within the $114,595 construction budget; the board approved the $114,360 contract award.
The board approved an SR-2 road addition resolution to forward Station Yard Road in the Croatan Crossing subdivision to NCDOT for consideration of state maintenance. That resolution passed on a motion from Commissioner Howard.
Sheriff Chip Hughes asked the board to accept a state appropriation award tied to search-and-rescue equipment and personnel needs. He said the grant award to the sheriff39s office was $200,000 under the cited appropriations act and that the underwater drone purchase would be cost-shared 50/50 with Emergency Management; the board approved a related budget amendment recorded at $247,380.
Facilities staff reported higher-than-expected vehicle and parts costs and requested a $150,000 amendment ($75,000 to garage expenditures and $75,000 to the charging department line); the board approved the amendment by roll call. The board also appointed Marlo Blake to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council by acclamation and directed the county attorney to advertise a surplus parcel (Bridgeton) for upset bids based on a revised $10,000 offer.
The meeting included manager and commissioner reports on workforce and economic development issues and closed with scheduled commissioner town-hall announcements.
