Hoboken superintendent recommends calendar option B for 2026–27; governance committee moves it forward

Hoboken — Superintendent Dr. Johnson presented four draft school calendars for 2026–27 and recommended "option B," which she said balances scheduling constraints created by a late Labor Day and two election dates held in district buildings.

"My recommendation is actually option B," Dr. Johnson said at the board’s Feb. meeting, explaining that option B aligns most closely with the two associations’ preferences and offers flexibility for snow days and for handling election days used as polling sites.

Dr. Johnson described the challenge: Labor Day falls later in the year in 2026, which compresses available days and can push the end of the school year later into June; additionally, the district typically uses several buildings for public polling, and moving those polling places would be necessary to stay open on election days. She said the district developed roughly 13 preliminary configurations and narrowed them to four options (A–D) that meet contractual obligations.

At the governance committee report, the committee chair moved to present calendar option B for approval and the motion was seconded. The board will vote on the calendar when the item appears on the formal agenda; Dr. Johnson invited board members to share any final thoughts before the motion comes to the floor.

Board members asked clarifying questions about technical effects of each option on last-day scheduling and professional-development days; Dr. Johnson said option B gives slightly more leeway for snow days and preserves commonly requested spring-break timing.

The meeting record shows the governance committee advanced the recommended option but does not record a final board vote on the calendar during the Feb. 1 public meeting.
