Council approves in-house plan to tweak cemetery roads and signage

Parks staff (Anthony Pearson) said morticians who tested a route with a hearse preferred the proposed directional flow for funeral processions. Council members asked staff to preserve large trees where possible but to examine narrowing a long landscape strip south of the road near the Veterans Monument so event parking and ceremonies are not impeded.
Staff recommended completing the modifications using the city’s in-house crews and blanket contractors at an estimated $14,000 rather than a contractor bid of about $25,000. Viking Excavation (contractor) flagged warranty concerns if city crews remove islands in recently finished work; council acknowledged the risk and agreed to move the item to action/consent with an in‑house approach and a request for staff to further evaluate the warranty and maintenance implications.
