The Cedar City Planning Commission recommended approval of a public utility easement (PUE) on city-owned property at the location of the city’s 'Welcome to Cedar City' sign to allow Rocky Mountain Power to terminate and bury power lines at that site.
Dan Forbes, who identified himself as a Rocky Mountain Power representative, explained that the utility is burying overhead power lines from Schertz Canyon Drive south past the overpass and that the power feed to the sign would terminate at the sign. Forbes said the proposed PUE was shifted 20 feet east of the fence line so it would remain outside planned road and sidewalk widening and allow space for curb, gutter and sidewalk. He also said the easement is proposed as a nonexclusive PUE so other entities could use it in the future.
City staff and commission members indicated they were comfortable with the plan. After a short public-hearing period with no speakers, a commissioner moved for a positive recommendation; the commissioners voted in favor and the recommendation will be forwarded to staff and the City Council for final action.
The staff record indicates the PUE is intended to accommodate both current burial needs and future additional utilities as the area develops.
