Council members introduced a resolution to appoint Johnny O. (styled in the meeting as “Johnny O.”) as Cedar City's Honorary Ambassador to Gapyeong City, Republic of Korea, ahead of an upcoming delegation trip.
Johnny O. described his two decades as a Cedar City resident, his work as a professor and administrator at Southern Utah University and his role helping develop sister‑city relationships and business connections. “I’m honored to be here with you tonight… I’m now a proud resident of Cedar City for the past 20 years,” he said, and outlined plans for a delegation to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Gapyeong.
Councilmembers asked logistical questions about whether the city would incur any expense (staff and the mayor said participants are paying their own way and the city currently has no expense), who else would attend the trip, and whether the honorary post has a defined term length. Johnny O. said he is willing to serve “however long… as long as I’m contributing.”
The mayor placed the resolution on action for a subsequent meeting; no formal vote was taken at the work session.
