Public commenter says county commission overrode planning commission; urges aquifer protection and CWPP integration

A public commenter told the planning commission that the county commission recently overrode the commission’s recommendation on an appointment and urged this year’s land-use-code revisions to add groundwater source protection (Glen Canyon and Castle Valley aquifers) and integration of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
During the public-comment period on Jan. 27, Trish told the planning commission she was "a little disturbed" that the county commission had recently overridden the planning commission’s recommendation on an appointment by a 4–3 vote.
Trish urged the commission to prioritize two items in the land-use-code rewrite: adding protections for sole-source groundwater aquifers (she cited the Glen Canyon and Castle Valley aquifer systems) and integrating the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) to address wildfire risk in the wildland-urban interface. She said those topics should be part of consultants’ work when the code is revised this year.
Staff and commissioners discussed wildfire and fuel-reduction work following the comment; a Division of Forestry representative described fuel-reduction benefits and an example in which fuel reduction around a structure stopped a fire from spreading to the forest.
