Resident urges Shenandoah supervisors to inspect short-term rentals after fatality linked to Airbnb

"This house happened to be an Airbnb. Recently, the owners of that Airbnb have been indicted on second degree manslaughter charges due to a lack of operational smoke detectors," John Lilly said. He told the board he has emailed supervisors, attended meetings, and identified units that he believes do not meet safety standards.
Lilly urged that short-term rental operations not be allowed by-right in residential zones and recommended regular inspections, comparing expectations for hotels and restaurants to what he described as lax standards for rentals. The board did not take action at the meeting; Chair (Speaker 1) invited additional public comment opportunities and said the board would note Lilly's concerns for future consideration.
