Hancock County board proclaims honor for longtime educator and coach Mike Nikas

The Hancock County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 20 issued a proclamation honoring Michael "Mike" Nikas of Bay St. Louis for his athletic achievements and long public-service career.
The board said Nikas excelled at Bay High School and at William Carey University, where the proclamation credited him with being an all-American and scoring 2,726 career points. It noted his basketball jersey was retired at both Bay High School and William Carey, that he was drafted by professional teams, and that he later served as assistant superintendent for the Hancock County School District and as chancery clerk from Jan. 1, 1980, until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1995.
Mike Nikas spoke briefly after the proclamation, thanking the board. "I'm not upset with you," he said, and added, "I wanna thank you guys for doing this." The board took photographs and the proclamation was recorded on the minutes.
The board voted unanimously to adopt the proclamation. There were no motions to amend the proclamation during the meeting. The board noted the proclamation was presented in January 2026.
The board did not take any additional action tied to the proclamation; no gifts or funding were announced in the meeting record.
