City Council unanimously adopted R192, a resolution committing the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Allentown Environmental Advisory Council to limit herbicide use in public parks and to pursue sustainable land-management alternatives.
Kyle Ropski, speaking on behalf of the Environmental Advisory Council, told council the EAC supports the measure and cited an intern’s research on invasive species that recommended minimizing herbicide use, applying chemicals sparingly and using mechanical or ecological approaches such as expanded native planting and timed mowing. Ropski said the intern’s report and additional resources are available on the EAC website.
Council members thanked parks maintenance staff for their work and expressed support for evidence-based, precautionary approaches to protect biodiversity and pollinators. There was no recorded opposition during public comment and the resolution passed by roll call.
The resolution is advisory policy-level direction to pursue sustainable practices and does not, by itself, create a binding prohibition on herbicide use; operational details and implementation steps were not detailed at the meeting and will be addressed by Parks and the EAC going forward.
