Planning Commission grants extension for 1901 South 12th Street warehouse project

The Allentown Planning Commission unanimously approved an extension request for the 1901 South 12th Street warehouse project, which staff said was previously approved on Dec. 13, 2022, and has revised plans now compliant with city code.
Jennifer of planning staff told the commission that the project team “received the various outside agency approvals and are otherwise ready to go.” Applicant attorney Jim Preston said the team had “spent a significant amount of time doing some asbestos abatement” and is “currently negotiating or working with PPL to look at the use as possible, data center use,” adding that demolition is expected to begin in January or February.
The chair called for a motion; an unidentified commissioner moved and another seconded. The extension was adopted by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The approval preserves the applicant’s conditional approval window while staff and the applicant proceed toward final land-development approval.
The commission briefly noted that data-center uses are on staff’s radar for future guidance and zoning review but did not take additional action on that subject. The commission’s action on the extension was procedural and does not replace any subsequent land-development or zoning approvals that may be required.
