Hancock County approves $5,000 donations to local American Legion and VFW posts

The board approved a motion to authorize payments “under 2493 subsection k” authorizing donations not to exceed $5,000 to each entity. The motion was moved by District 2, seconded, and passed 5–0.
Representatives from Bay St. Louis American Legion and VFW posts, Waveland American Legion, Lakeshore VFW and other local posts attended the meeting. James LeFleur, who identified himself as commander of American Legion Post 70, thanked the board and described the immediate benefits of the donation, saying the funds “help us to fix our facilities so we can better in the future continue to give to the veterans of our community and also to our local community.”
County staff said the discussion began when post leaders requested help to repair parking lots and other maintenance needs; county counsel advised that direct repairs by the county were not permissible but a monetary donation was allowable under the cited subsection.
The board arranged for a photograph and public presentation of the checks after the meeting. No dissenting votes were recorded; the motion carried 5–0.
Next steps: county staff will issue the payments as authorized and coordinate the presentations with the posts.
