Allentown Planning Commission report: development activity rises in 2025

The City of Allentown Planning Commission on Jan. 13 approved its 2025 annual report and highlighted a notable uptick in development activity compared with 2024.
Brian, a planning staff member who presented the report, told commissioners the commission recorded 52 actions in 2025 and summarized proposed residential and nonresidential development activity for the year. "This report is split into 2 sections, an introduction and the 2025 activity summary," he said.
Why it matters: the staff summary showed more major land development proposals and higher projected square footage than the year before, information commissioners said helps them and City Council see trends beyond individual meeting agendas.
Staff and commissioners discussed adding two- and three-year comparison columns and a visual summary for City Council. "When comparing development activity between 2024 and 2025...this year there was 52, significant increase," Speaker 5 said, noting the number of major land developments rose from 13 to 20.
What’s next: staff will forward the annual report to City Council by March 1, including the requested trend visuals and the commission’s recommended edits. The commission said no further action was required at this meeting.
