At the Oct. 25 meeting, Mayor Jason Showalter read two proclamations: one declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Goodland and another recognizing Public Power Week.
Lenny White of Options, a domestic violence and victim‑service provider with offices in Colby and Hays, asked the commission to declare the month to raise awareness and promote community support for survivors. "Options...help women and men, teens that are dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking," White said, and the proclamation cited state and local statistics, including Sherman County reporting 29 domestic violence incidents and 38 arrests in 2023 and Options providing 141 services to survivors in that period.
Mayor Showalter read the Domestic Violence Awareness proclamation, urging citizens to "speak out against domestic violence" and encouraging policies and community support for survivors. He then read a proclamation recognizing Public Power Week, praising Goodland’s community‑owned electric utility and its employees for reliable, not‑for‑profit service and consumer protections.
The commissions posed no objections and joined the mayor in supporting the proclamations; staff requested a photograph with the Options representative after the reading.
