Options reports domestic-violence services data for county, requests $3,000 from city

Dawn Gable, representing Options (Northwest Kansas Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services), presented the organization's 2023 service data and a funding request to the Goodland City Commission.
Gable said Options recorded 29 domestic-violence incidents in the county in 2023 that led to 38 arrests and noted two reported sexual-assault incidents; she described local service activity as more than 100 domestic-violence services provided in the county and praised law-enforcement response. Gable said Options does not currently have a dedicated shelter in the county and is working to add eight shelter beds in Colby by remodeling an existing building that was previously an office.
Gable explained Options’ primary funding comes from the Victims of Crime Act and other federal/state sources and that gaps remain, so the organization submitted a $3,000 appropriation request to the city for the upcoming year. She offered to provide the correct county report to the city clerk via email after noting she had accidentally brought another county’s report to the meeting.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about services, shelter capacity and partnerships; no formal vote on the $3,000 request was taken that night.
