Newport Council appoints interim fire chief and approves retirement-plan change for officer

Councilors explained the appointment is temporary while the city continues recruitment for a permanent chief and said it was important to have a seasoned leader in place in the interim.
Both motions passed by voice vote; the council reported no other action resulting from the executive sessions that preceded the votes.
