Following executive sessions on employee labor-relations and fire-department personnel, the Newport City Council approved two personnel actions. First, the council voted to remove Officer Morin from the city's retirement system so he may establish his own retirement plan with comparable benefits and authorized council sign-off on any necessary forms.
Second, councilors moved and approved the appointment of Kevin Lacasse, listed as the second assistant fire chief, to serve as interim fire chief effective Oct. 8, 2024. Councilors explained the appointment is temporary while the city continues recruitment for a permanent chief and said it was important to have a seasoned leader in place in the interim.
Both motions passed by voice vote; the council reported no other action resulting from the executive sessions that preceded the votes.
