The Newport City Council approved the police department's request to buy replacement ballistic plates for patrol cruisers. The police chief explained the plates are stored in each cruiser for critical incidents and are distinct from daily patrol vests; he described them as rated "level 3, 3 a" and said the panels protect against higher-level ballistics. "These are level 3, 3 a, rated to stop, like, higher level of ballistics like most rifle rounds," the police chief said.
The chief said the city has seven vehicles and maintains plates in each car, with two plates per vehicle (front and back). He told the council the plates are a little over $500 apiece and that he had been setting aside $5,000 annually in the capital plan; he said approximately $13,000 remained in the capital line to cover the purchase. The council moved, seconded and approved the purchase by voice vote.
The purchase was funded from capital-plan reserves and no additional appropriation was requested at the meeting.
