Historic commission approves side-entry portico at 409 North 15th Street

The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously on Feb. 12 to approve a new side-entry portico at 409 North 15th Street.
Staff presented the proposal for the Allen B. Love House — described in the Carolina Heights National Register inventory as a c.1931, one-and-a-half-story Cape Cod–style dwelling — noting the portico would replicate the existing front entry’s pedimented gable and use historically appropriate wood brackets and trim. Staff recommended conditions that the portico match the style of the existing front entrance and that all construction comply with code.
Commissioner Steven Sulke moved to approve the request with staff conditions; Joan Kesten seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The commission’s approval was limited to the design as presented and included the staff report’s conditions; appeals of commission decisions go first to the Wilmington board of adjustment and then to superior court, and must be filed within 30 days of the action.
