Mariposa County Creative Placemaking Committee approves minutes, hears program updates

The Mariposa County Creative Placemaking Committee approved the Dec. 15 minutes by voice vote and then moved into updates on public-art programs and local activation projects. Chair Ava Burns opened the meeting and confirmed the committee had a quorum before members approved the minutes.
Committee members heard that the Smithsonian Institution’s Rural Initiative will visit Mariposa, with a public reception scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10, and a presentation to the Board of Supervisors the same day in the afternoon. Burns urged members to attend community events tied to the visit.
Members also reviewed the artist-in-residency program: a panel will meet on the 28th to select two local and two visiting artists for two- to three-week residencies tied to Mariposa Creek and the Mariposa Creek Parkway. Burns said the residencies will include presentations and community-facing activities.
Hannah Harrison and others updated the committee on a public-art database and story map the group is developing. Harrison described the planned data fields — title, medium, artist bio and statement, location and funding — and stressed that quality photographs will be important for promotion. A committee member said the group is working with county GIS support to make the database a single source of truth, and that the county’s listings could feed Google Maps and tourism apps to help visitors find art sites.
The committee also received a report on the Frost Shop lot activations. Zav described small-scale programming already underway (food-bank events and vendor requests), said the group is drafting a new conditional-use permit to allow more frequent activations, and reported that “we have been offered a 53-foot refrigerated truck from the sheriff’s office under contract” to provide refrigerated storage for producers and to serve as a multiuse staging element. Zav said the group hopes to have key pieces in place by March and into April, and discussed logistical issues including sound, vendor scheduling and county code considerations for container-style structures.
Members closed the meeting with a series of community announcements — including Poetry Out Loud county events, hiring for free day camps and a student film contest with a March 15 submission deadline — and agreed to move the February meeting to Feb. 23 to accommodate appointments and elections.
