Oregon Board of Education reviews student reports, approves routine business and schedules executive session

At its Oct. 15 meeting the Oregon Board of Education heard student-government reports, received financial and superintendent updates, and approved transportation contracts, an overnight baseball trip, donations and disposal of outdated books; an executive session was scheduled.
The Oregon Board of Education met on Oct. 15, 2024, hearing student-government updates, financial and superintendent reports and approving several routine items.
Student government members from the high school reported on recent activities and attendance. "I'm a senior at high school. I've been in student government for 4 years," said Pearson Lehnert, who described senior parking-spot fundraising and pep-rally events. Ethan Ackerman, an executive student government officer, said the district marked Attendance Awareness Month and reported that "during last month, 461 students had no unexcused absences, tardies, or early dismissals." He also summarized fundraising and upcoming arts and band events.
The district treasurer, Missus Freeman, gave a brief financial overview, noting that "real-estate tax collections are a little bit higher than our spring estimates" and that operating revenues are higher partly because of Medicaid reimbursements. Freeman said audit fieldwork was completed and GAP work papers should be finished the following week.
On routine business the board moved and approved a package of items. The board approved by roll call:
- Adoption of the agenda as written. - Acceptance of the treasurer's report. - Approval of the consent agenda. - Transportation contracts for the 2024–25 school year with the Anderson, Webb and West families to transport students to the Toledo School for the Arts. - An overnight trip for the Clay High School baseball team to Louisville, Kentucky, March 28–30, 2025. - Acceptance of donations from Mercy Saint Charles (school supplies valued at approximately $1,000 and $500 toward NEST shirts) and a couch valued at $300 donated by the Tawul family. - Approval of a slate of student organizations, including the Limelighters, Clay Band Boosters and district athletic and activity booster organizations. - Disposal of 453 books from Cardinal Stritch dated back to 2006.
Twenty-four policy items were presented for first reading; the chair said recommendations for adoption will be made in November and that most updates stem from state legislation enacted in June 2024. Superintendent Dr. Fritz thanked student council members and described a district emphasis on preparing students for graduation with academic and personal skills, saying the goal is to ensure students "walk across the stage of graduation prepared for whatever they want to do."
The board set its next regular meeting for Nov. 19 and a work session for the week of Nov. 4 at 5:00 p.m. Before adjournment the board moved into an executive session to discuss personnel and other confidential matters allowed by law; the chair stated no decisions will be made in executive session.
