Students, volunteers and new coach highlighted at board meeting
Summary

The Oregon Board of Education highlighted student leadership and community support at its Feb. 18 meeting.
Jeff Straka, principal at Jerusalem Elementary, introduced third- and fourth-grade student council members and advisors (Ms. Linville, Mrs. Wasserman, and Mrs. Howard), who described community service projects this school year including a hygiene drive (556 items) and a PB&J drive (560 items). Students spoke about upcoming events such as spring family night and a carnival and read personal "future heart" goals like becoming a nurse or a teacher.
The board presented a formal recognition to Hope Community Church and thanked pastor Jacob Haas and parishioners after the church helped collect funds and resources for students in need. "We heard a need in the community, and we were able to kind of step up," Haas said.
Joe Kiss, athletic director at Clay High School, introduced Derek Pennington, the district's newly hired varsity football coach. Pennington thanked the board and community and said he is excited to begin work; the board expressed appreciation for the hire and for retiring staff members acknowledged during the meeting.
The meeting included routine agenda business following these recognitions. Parents with children who presented were invited to leave early, and the board noted upcoming community events and student achievements across academics and athletics.
