The Newport City Council on Tuesday handled routine business and several administrative votes, approving the consent agenda, appointing a new recreation committee member, awarding a state grant-funded Bluff Road pump station contract, and designating the mayor as the city's VLCT/VERB voting delegate.
The consent agenda — including meeting minutes, accounts payable warrants, and routine permits — passed on a voice vote. Director Mike Brown introduced a candidate for the parks and recreation committee; the council appointed Kyle Chadburn after noting his community involvement with seasonal events and the school board.
DPW staff described the Bluff Road pump station project, which is funded by a state grant for combined sewer overflow work at Bluff Road and Prouty Drive. Staff said three bids were received and that the city’s engineer, Amy, reviewed all submissions and found them acceptable; staff recommended awarding the contract to the lowest acceptable bidder, MSI, and the council approved that award by voice vote.
The council also appointed the mayor as the voting delegate for the annual VLCT and VERB meetings, approved administrative document signings related to a recently approved police cruiser, and confirmed the next regular meeting for Oct. 7, 2024. Council voted to enter executive session to conduct fire chief interviews and said no action was taken after returning to open session.
During public comment, a resident, Terry, asked the city to extend current Glen Road paving to the town line rather than stopping at the prison, saying paving while equipment is present would be cheaper; city staff said they were investigating the request.
The meeting adjourned at about 10:15 p.m.
