Herriman speakers urge caution with fireworks, provide emergency dispatch number

Two unidentified speakers at a Herriman Events session urged residents to take precautions with fireworks ahead of Independence Day, citing the risk of fires that could destroy homes and lives and advising people to report illegal use to emergency dispatch.

Unidentified Speaker 1 said they "love fireworks" but expressed sadness that fireworks could not be held at town days because "it was simply not safe," adding that "you can really destroy someone's life if you burn down their home." They advised residents and the council that "just because you can, doesn't mean mean you should," and told people to "watch the weather" and "see what the wind's doing" before deciding to light fireworks.

Unidentified Speaker 2, speaking for public safety, said fireworks are "very common" in Herriman and acknowledged the day is "not the fire department's favorite." They asked residents to report hazardous or illegal fireworks activity by calling emergency dispatch: "If you do see someone lighting off fireworks in, kind of a vegetated, undeveloped field or in a place that you know is not legal, call emergency dispatch. (801) 840-4000. We want those things reported." They emphasized the intent is to "prevent fires" rather than to generate ticket revenue and noted police cannot be on "every street constantly throughout the whole night."

Speakers urged neighbors to speak with one another about concerns and to discourage unsafe uses.
