Planning commission approves site plan for new storage building at 811 Highway 24

The Goodland Planning Commission on Monday approved a site plan for a new storage facility at 811 Highway 24.

The project calls for a single 30-foot-by-300-foot building with units split into 10-foot and 20-foot sizes, the applicant said. The applicant told commissioners there will be no staffed office; rentals and customer service would be handled online or by phone. “There will be no windows because it is a storage unit building,” a planning staff member said during the review, noting the design is intended to protect renters’ security.

Commissioners heard that the site will use asphalt millings for the immediate surface after grading and pad preparation and that additional millings would be used as they become available. The applicant also described a lighting plan with downward-pointing fixtures designed to limit light pollution and avoid shining into neighboring properties, and a 4-by-8 sign positioned in the northeast corner of the lot.

Staff identified several outstanding items that must be satisfied before a building permit can be issued, including confirmation of the owner and contractor, a stamped engineering plan and finalized screening and trash-access details. The building official’s checklist otherwise found the submission complete.

A commissioner moved to approve the site plan “as completed by the building official,” the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Next steps: the applicant must provide the required engineer stamp and contractor information before the city issues a permit.
